Traveling Abroad as a Senior

Retirement equals travel time! There are many benefits of traveling abroad later in life, including getting out of the house, getting exercise, and meeting new people.

There are a few details that you need to keep in mind while traveling abroad such as…

1 Insurance: It’s important to purchase travel insurance to cover any trip abroad, but seniors should consider supplemental travel insurance that includes medical coverage in case of illness or injury. (Medicare doesn’t cover healthcare services outside the US.)

2 Packing: Well-seasoned travelers know to bring a raincoat, sunscreen, and first aid kit. In addition to these essentials don’t forget your passport. Now, if you wear readers, don’t forget an extra pair of glasses. Bring a broken-in pair of walking shoes as well as a spare pair. Ancient sites can be quite slippery, so make sure your footwear has excellent traction.

3 Language: If you’re traveling to a non-English speaking country, you’ll want to memorize a few words and phrases to help you get around. Sure you could carry around a phrasebook, or you could use a translation app like Google Translate on your smartphone. Simply plug the English word and select the language you need. The speaker icon lets you listen to the pronunciation. There’s even a feature now that lets you take a picture of text, using the camera on your phone, that will translate written text visually–super handy for dining menus, signs, or newspapers!

Now, if you have any pictures from your trips that you would like to share we’d love to hear from you! However, if you happen to need some travel suggestions, then please feel free to like us on Facebook. That way, you’ll be able to join our senior community to connect and communicate with others who have been through similar experiences.
