We’re still dealing with this intense heat, so why not have summer reminders. It’s the perfect time to review practices of safety and activities for seniors.
Avoiding Dehydration: It’s important to stay hydrated, especially while outside. Most people don’t drink enough water in general. Try to drink at least eight glasses a day, particularly if you’re medications cause sweating.
Eye Care: Now, if you’re prescription glasses aren’t transitions wear a pair of sunglasses to avoid the glare. Plus, wear a hat with a visor is an added bonus.
Skin Care: Use sunblock that is a minimum of 15 SPF and water resistant, especially if you’re going swimming.
Water Based Activities: Swimming and water aerobics can help you beat the heat while staying fit. Water activities for seniors are usually low-impact and great for individuals with arthritis or stiff joints.
Cool Treats: Summer wouldn’t be complete without a cool dessert! An ice cream social is a great way to engage with others, while cooling off with a sweet treat. Furthermore, ice cream has calcium and vitamin D.
Getting Out: While the heat may limit certain outdoor activities, it’s still important to get outside. Sunlight is a great source of vitamin D, which helps to fight osteoporosis, anxiety, depression, boosts the immune system, and improves brain health.
We hope these summer reminders help you this season. However, if you happen to need some extra convincing, then please feel free to join our senior community to connect and communicate with others.
