Osteoporosis in Seniors

Osteoporosis in seniors is very common, but it needs to be treated. It’s found more in women, but that doesn’t mean that men can’t be diagnosed with it as well. Osteoporosis is when your bones become thin, lose density, and become increasingly fragile. It is a process that develops gradually over many years, and it can lead to fractures particularly to the hips and even wrist (due to falling.)

There are some natural at home remedies and lifestyle changes that you can implement…

1. Taking certain supplements such as vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium can help.

2. There are exercises you can do on a daily basis such as stretching and balancing.

3. Having healthy, clean nutrition is important with calcium enriched foods like soybeans, green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, turnips, etc.), and dairy products (milk, cheese, and yogurt.)

4. Decluttering your home to reduce fall risks is essential. Removing area rugs and extra unnecessary furniture is key.

In addition to all of the above, you should consult with your doctor to see if medication should be taken as well. There are many option that can be prescribed.
