Summer Cooking for Seniors

We are smack in the middle of summer and it’s extremely hot! Most people won’t want to turn on the oven, but there are so many foods that are easy to make. Plus, it’s important to stay hydrated and you can accomplish this with more than just beverages. So, that’s exactly why we’re going to discuss summer cooking!

Here are some ideas you can do to have fun in the kitchen while still staying cool…

1. Fruits salads filled with watermelon, cantaloupes, apples, and pears offer excellent hydration during summer. Citrus fruits offer excellent immunity to help seniors stay away from heat-borne infections. Berries and cherries reduce fatigue and improve digestion.

2. Always bake, boil, or grill protein foods for and avoid frying them.

3. Eat lighter proteins such as egg whites, cottage cheese, or yogurt.

4. If you are a soup lover, then try a cold bowl filled with avocados, peas, and other vegetables. All you have to use is a blender.

Lastly, as a special note, it would be best to avoid the following foods because they can only contribute to dehydration issues…

  • Seafood because they contain high contents of salt
  • Carbonated drinks and sweet treats with artificial flavors and colors
  • Caffeine and alcohol

Now, if you have any mouth-watering recipes to share with us, we’d love to hear from you! However, if you happen to need ideas, then please feel free to like us on Facebook.
